Fossil Free Sport
Winter sports rely on a stable climate. We're calling on the IOC, FIS, and all sports organizations to end fossil fuel sponsorships and protect the future of our games.
The Problem
Fossil fuels account for nearly 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions, driving climate change.
By 2050, only a handful of classic Winter Olympic venues will remain viable hosts due to climate change.
Record-breaking heatwaves push athletes to dangerous physical limits and threaten sport conditions.
The Contradiction
It is a fundamental contradiction to celebrate human achievement through Olympic sport while being funded by the fossil fuel industry that threatens the very conditions upon which all Olympic sports depend—reliable snow, safe temperatures, and stable climate.
Fossil fuel companies use the prestige of sports sponsorship to distract attention from the climate harm they are causing. We cannot allow this greenwashing to continue.
Our Demands
Establish Formal Dialogue
The IOC must invite athlete representatives to present their position to the IOC Sustainability and Legacy Commission and Executive Board.
Ground in Science
Decisions must be guided by independent climate science and the lived experience of winter sport athletes, aligned with the IOC's stated climate commitments.
Adopt Sponsor Eligibility Policy
The IOC and FIS must formally adopt a policy defining fossil fuel companies as ineligible for Olympic sponsorships, comparable to the existing ban on tobacco sponsorship.
Integrate Into Strategic Framework
Embed this position explicitly within the IOC's Fit for the Future framework, ensuring consistent application across all future Olympic Games.
A Historical Precedent
In 1988, the Calgary Winter Games became the first "smoke-free" Olympics, leading to a permanent ban on tobacco sponsorship. At that time, the IOC took a bold stand for public health.
Today, climate science requires a similar act of leadership. Just as tobacco was deemed incompatible with the physical health of athletes, fossil fuels are fundamentally incompatible with the survival of our sports.
The time for bold action is now. There is no time to lose.
